Mental Illness Awareness Week 2020

Thursday, October 8, 2020
Posted by: PSCFL Staff

Mental Illness Awareness Week was established in 1990 by the U.S. congress in recognition of efforts by NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness). This was establish to educate and increase awareness about mental illness. Mental Illness Awareness Week takes place the first week of October every year.

Mental Health conditions should generally be discussed all year around but this week highlights the importance of mental illnesses and gives individuals the opportunity to express their struggles they might face on a day to day basis.

Peer Support Coalition of Florida supports the mental health community and individuals who experience challenges with their mental health. We also support those who are in recovery or who have been in recovery and who take their experiences to help others with their own mental health challenges.

In honor of Mental Illness Awareness week Peer Support Coalition of Florida has put together a Coloring Book activity that demonstrates a wellness tool used as a form of therapy. Art therapy allows individuals to express themselves creatively and can foster healing and mental well being. Art helps to explore emotions, develop self-awareness, cope with stress, boost self-esteem, and work on social skills.
