January's guest is Karen Webber of Baltimore, Maryland. Karen is a teaching and performing artist whose music/theatre pieces are performed in college classrooms, senior centers, and on zoom. Certified as a Peer Recovery Specialist in the state of Maryland in 2021, Karen designs creative programs and peer trainings with the older adult population in mind for the Mental Health Association of Maryland. From 2020-2021, Karen was a peer supporter in a study of Older Adults with depression at Johns Hopkins. Karen developed 'Mona's Hairbrush,' an innovation program anchored by an abstract short film on dementia. It was a recipient of a creativity grant from the Maryland Arts Council. As a teaching artist for over 20 years, Karen has worked with older adults in Arts for the Aging and Art with a Heart. Karen will be taking us through the her latest project, a short film called Mona's Hairbrush that helps people relate to and understand more about caring for someone living with Dementia. Karen’s poems and rituals can be online in Poetica, Voice of Eve, The Jewish Writing Project and in print in Breaking Ground Magazine, The Torrid Literature Journal, and Lilith Magazine among others.
